There are currently about 600 conservation projects being funded through the Zoo's grant programs. The zoo is expanding its RainForest and building a new home for the gorillas and orangutans. The project is expected to take several years and will include several phases. Construction is expected to start next year. The zoo is currently fundraising for the Primate Forest expansion, but officials do not know when construction will begin. The project will also significantly expand the RainForest and include the latest animal care innovations.

 

The Cleveland Metroparks Zoo is located in the University Circle area. Wade Park Zoo originally opened in 1882, and the Cleveland Museum of Art was nearby. In 1907, Wade Park was transferred to its current location near W. 25th St. The Cleveland Museum of Natural History was established as the zoo's first director. In 1940, Cleveland City Council approved the purchase of Brookside Park east of Fulton Rd. and voters approved bond issues to build the Bird Bldg. and the Pachyderm Bldg. The Cleveland Zoological Society was formed in 1950 and became a separate corporation.

On Mondays, children and adults can visit the Zoo for free, while the RainForest is just $6.00 for residents of the Cuyahoga County and Hinckley Township. The RainForest admission price on Mondays does not apply to Monday holidays between Memorial Day and Labor Day. To save even more money, visitors can purchase the Total Experience Pass, which is valued at $24, and includes unlimited rides, discounted Eagle Zip Adventure, and 10% off purchases at the gift shop.
